Mnetのサバイバルプログラム「アイドル学校(아이돌학교)」の出演者の中で得票数上位9人を選抜して結成された。
グループ名のfromis_9はアイドル学校出身(FROM Idol School)という意味と、続いて成長していくファンとの約束(promise)という意味を込めた名前である。
そして9はメンバー数9人を意味する。アイドル学校の最終回(2017年9月29日)でグループ名は「fromis_」になることが発表されたが、
その後2017年11月23日「fromis_の部屋」放送終了直後Mnetとティーザーでグループ名が「fromis_(プロミス)」ではなく「fromis_9(プロミスナイン)」に変更された。
