Cal State Bakersfield President Horace Mitchell released a statement to the entire campus Monday saying "It is with deep sadness that I inform you that Mr. Shinsuke Sato, a CSUB student from Yokohama, Japan, died in an automobile accident early Sunday morning on I-5 near Santa Clarita."

Cal State Bakersfield student Eiji Okuda remains in critical condition in a Los Angeles area hospital and Bakersfield College student Tetsuya Nakayama had minor injuries, said Okuda's Bakersfield host Sharon Hoffman.
Hoffman said the three were on their way home to Bakersfield after attending a Dodgers game. The men's Nissan was hit around 2:30 a.m. by a Chrysler driving south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5, according to the California Highway Patrol. Officers said Ruben Rodriguez, 21, caused the fatal crash just minutes after fleeing from another head-on collision.
