Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) on Friday admitted that did not personally review the applications for surveillance warrants that provide the basis of the classified memo released earlier in the day.
Nunes said he relied on the review of committee member Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.).
“No, I didn’t,” Nunes told Fox News’s Bret Baier, when asked if he saw the applications.
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, torched Nunes earlier in the week for not reading all the materials involved in creating the document. He acknowledged the agreement Nunes referenced, but blasted the chairman for sending someone else to read the documents.
"The chairman never bothered to go read these underlying materials," Schiff told CNN's Anderson Cooper on Monday. "After months and months of making this argument that the FBI and DOJ are involved in some sort of conspiracy, he didn't even bother to read the materials himself."
The memo highlights the investigators’ interest in Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page in the investigation, alleging that information used in October 2016 to obtain permission to monitor his activities was politically tainted.
But the memo also points to another individual with ties to the Trump campaign, George Papadopolous, as a key factor in the instigation of the FBI’s Russia probe.
Papadopoulos, a young foreign-policy consultant who pleaded guilty in the special counsel’s investigation, is now reported to be a cooperating witness.
“The Papadopoulos information triggered the opening of an FBI counterintelligence investigation in late July 2016 by FBI agent Pete Strzok,” the memo noted in its final paragraph.
That timing is significant, given the FBI did not seek authorization to conduct surveillance on Page until three months later, on Oct. 21, 2016.
Democrats quickly seized on that sentence to assert the Republicans’ own memo shows the Russia investigation would be underway with or without the surveillance of Page

It also underscores what Democrats say is a disconnect between intelligence documents that have not been made public and the conclusions Republicans have drawn from them.
“Unlike almost every House member who voted in favor of this memo’s release, I have actually read the underlying documents on which the memo was based,” said Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark R. Warner (D-Va.). “They simply do not support its conclusion.”
Even some Republicans cautioned against drawing too broad a conclusion from the memo and what it alleged about the initial motivations of the investigators.
“As I have said repeatedly, I also remain 100 percent confident in Special Counsel Robert Mueller. The contents of this memo do not ? in any way ? discredit his investigation,” Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) tweeted. Gowdy, who announced Wednesday that he will not run for reelection, is an influential voice, given he led the politically charged House probe into the 2012 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya.
'In 2016, the Russian government engaged in an elaborate plot to interfere in an American election and undermine our democracy,' McCain wrote in the statement.
'While we have no evidence that these efforts affected the outcome of our election, I fear they succeeded in fueling political discord and dividing us from one another.'
Released around the same time that the memo was declassified, the Arizona Republican characterized the memo and its release as 'partisan attacks' on the FBI and the Department of Justice.
Our nation's elected officials, including the President, must stop looking at this investigation through the warped lens of politics and manufacturing partisan sideshows,' McCain said.
He added that such 'partisan attacks' on the FBI and the Department of Justice 'serve no American interests, no party's, no president's, only Putin's'.

Gov. Phil Bryant is not interested in going to the U.S. Senate, despite urging from President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
The Washington Post reported Thursday night that McConnell met with Bryant this week and asked the governor to appoint himself in the event that Sen. Thad Cochran stepped down in the coming months.
Sources close to Bryant told the Clarion Ledger after the Post report was published that Bryant is not interested in such a scenario. The sources did confirm the conversation with McConnell and also said the president had talked to Bryant about the same thing.
The same sources said Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves would be the leading candidate if Cochran steps down. Reeves is expected to run for governor next year. He announced this week that he had more than $5 million in his state campaign account.
McDaniel has been talking about challenging Sen. Roger Wicker in this year's regularly scheduled primary, but he hasn't jumped in yet. McDaniel may be waiting as long as possible before the March 1 filing deadline to see if there will be a special election for Cochran's seat, a race that would probably be much easier for him to win than a campaign against Wicker. McDaniel himself acknowledged to the Post that he had delayed his decision "because of the multiple options." 0234名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。2018/02/05(月) 22:38:48.03ID:iHgAEjjX>>222 ロシアゲートは共和党にとってもトランプに対する手綱になるからな モラーをコントロールできるなら味方にするだろう トランプも殺さずモラーも殺さず利用したいのが本音だろ 0235エルトゥールル ◆hbayNPWdX7g8 2018/02/05(月) 22:40:45.27ID:CjywrNjh McDaniel would be the clear underdog in a race against Wicker, but a special election would be another story. In Mississippi special elections, all the candidates run on one officially nonpartisan ballot, and if no one takes a majority, the two candidates with the most votes advance to the general. If McDaniel could harness enough anti-establishment Republicans, he'd have a good chance to blow past McConnell's chosen candidate and take on a Democrat.

President Trump took to Twitter Saturday morning, crowing that the Nunes memo "totally vindicates" him in the Russia investigation and calling the probe an "American disgrace." But the President's assertion was contradicted today by a surprising source?one of the memo’s authors, Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy. He told CBS' Face the Nation that he doesn’t believe the memo, which accuses the FBI of misleading a foreign intelligence surveillance court in order to garner permission to spy on Trump aide Carter Page, has "any impact on the Russia probe."
The memo alleges that the FBI used claims from British spy Christopher Steele’s dossier as a basis for requesting permission to surveil Page, without revealing that the dossier was funded by the Democrats. Gowdy, however, insisted that the Russian investigation would still have gone forward, even in the absence the Steele dossier.
"There is a Russia investigation without a dossier," said Gowdy, who went on to list incidents that likely would have sparked such an investigation, dossier or no. "The dossier has nothing to do with the meeting at Trump Tower. The dossier has nothing to do with an email sent by Cambridge Analytica. The dossier really has nothing to do with George Papadopoulos' meeting in Great Britain. It also doesn’t have anything to do with obstruction of justice." 0240エルトゥールル ◆hbayNPWdX7g8 2018/02/05(月) 23:37:27.71ID:CjywrNjh 調査監視の申請書をゴウディが読んで その意見やメモをソースにヌネス(のスタッフ)がまとめたという事のようだが その割にはゴウディとヌネスで意見の相違がある 0241名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。
