Mathematical works In 1910 Steinitz published the very influential paper Algebraische Theorie der Korper (German: Algebraic Theory of Fields, Crelle's Journal (1910), 167?309). In this paper he axiomatically studies the properties of fields and defines important concepts like prime field, perfect field and the transcendence degree of a field extension. Steinitz proved that every field has an algebraic closure. He also made fundamental contributions to the theory of polyhedra: Steinitz's theorem for polyhedra is that the 1-skeletons of convex polyhedra are exactly the 3-connected planar graphs. His work in this area was published posthumously as a 1934 book, Vorlesungen uber die Theorie der Polyeder unter Einschluss der Elemente der Topologie,[1] by Hans Rademacher.
さて、英語版 ”Division rings used to be called "fields" in an older usage. In many languages, a word meaning "body" is used for division rings, in some languages designating either commutative or non-commutative division rings, while in others specifically designating commutative division rings (what we now call fields in English). ” だって つまり、英語では、"fields" は可換体で、 a word meaning "body"= 体は、”is used for division rings”だって。
In abstract algebra, a division ring, also called a skew field, is a ring in which division is possible. Specifically, it is a nonzero ring[1] in which every nonzero element a has a multiplicative inverse, i.e., an element x with a・x = x・a = 1. Stated differently, a ring is a division ring if and only if the group of units equals the set of all nonzero elements. A division ring is a type of noncommutative ring under the looser definition where noncommutative ring refers to rings which are not necessarily commutative.
Division rings differ from fields only in that their multiplication is not required to be commutative. However, by Wedderburn's little theorem all finite division rings are commutative and therefore finite fields. Historically, division rings were sometimes referred to as fields, while fields were called "commutative fields".[5]
All division rings are simple, i.e. have no two-sided ideal besides the zero ideal and itself.
Main theorems Wedderburn's little theorem: All finite division rings are commutative and therefore finite fields. (Ernst Witt gave a simple proof.) Frobenius theorem: The only finite-dimensional associative division algebras over the reals are the reals themselves, the complex numbers, and the quaternions.
Related notions Division rings used to be called "fields" in an older usage. In many languages, a word meaning "body" is used for division rings, in some languages designating either commutative or non-commutative division rings, while in others specifically designating commutative division rings (what we now call fields in English). A more complete comparison is found in the article Field (mathematics).
The name "Skew field" has an interesting semantic feature: a modifier (here "skew") widens the scope of the base term (here "field"). Thus a field is a particular type of skew field, and not all skew fields are fields.
While division rings and algebras as discussed here are assumed to have associative multiplication, nonassociative division algebras such as the octonions are also of interest.
A near-field is an algebraic structure similar to a division ring, except that it has only one of the two distributive laws.
乗法単位元: R の元 1R が存在して、R の全ての元 a に対して 1R * a = a * 1R = a を満たす。
これと対照的に、乗法単位元を持つことを強調する場合には、単位的環や単位環 (unital ring, unitary ring) あるいは単位元を持つ環 (ring with unity, ring with identity, rings with 1) などと呼ぶ[7]。
より正確に、環 (R, +, ・ ) とその両側イデアル I が与えられたとき、剰余環あるいは商環 R/I とは、I による(台となる加法群 (R, +) に関する)剰余類全体の成す集合に (a + I) + (b + I) = (a + b) + I, (a + I)(b + I) = (ab) + I. という演算を入れたものをいう。
各 i ∈ I に対して Ai が Ri のイデアルであれば、A = Πi ∈ I Ai は R のイデアルである。
History The modern concept of an abstract group developed out of several fields of mathematics.[8][9][10]
The 19th-century French mathematician Evariste Galois, extending prior work of Paolo Ruffini and Joseph-Louis Lagrange, gave a criterion for the solvability of a particular polynomial equation in terms of the symmetry group of its roots (solutions).
More general permutation groups were investigated in particular by Augustin Louis Cauchy. Arthur Cayley's On the theory of groups, as depending on the symbolic equation θn = 1 (1854) gives the first abstract definition of a finite group.[13]
Geometry was a second field in which groups were used systematically, especially symmetry groups as part of Felix Klein's 1872 Erlangen program.[14] After novel geometries such as hyperbolic and projective geometry had emerged, Klein used group theory to organize them in a more coherent way. Further advancing these ideas, Sophus Lie founded the study of Lie groups in 1884.[15]
The third field contributing to group theory was number theory. Certain abelian group structures had been used implicitly in Carl Friedrich Gauss' number-theoretical work Disquisitiones Arithmeticae (1798), and more explicitly by Leopold Kronecker.[16] In 1847, Ernst Kummer made early attempts to prove Fermat's Last Theorem by developing groups describing factorization into prime numbers.[17]
The convergence of these various sources into a uniform theory of groups started with Camille Jordan's Traite des substitutions et des equations algebriques (1870).[18] Walther von Dyck (1882) introduced the idea of specifying a group by means of generators and relations, and was also the first to give an axiomatic definition of an "abstract group", in the terminology of the time.[19] As of the 20th century, groups gained wide recognition by the pioneering work of Ferdinand Georg Frobenius and William Burnside, who worked on representation theory of finite groups, Richard Brauer's modular representation theory and Issai Schur's papers.[20]
