The reason why the average Japanese citizens lead poorer life than Westerners is because the they themselves purposely choose to reduce their consumption and to live a poor life by not taking holidays.
It is all they choose to do. It is quite same as it'd impossible to tell monks to "live a rich human life". The Japanese age of processing trade has already ended long ago.
